At Agency 2012, we posed two challenges; one from Battelle (reducing the spread of HIV through adult male circumcision) and one from Washington State University (halting the transmission of rabies from animal to human through vaccination campaigns). We heard that Agency attendees wanted direct opportunities to be involved with meaningful global health work, so this is our response. Battelle and WSU will provide background and wicked cool/smart staff to talk about your ideas for their challenges. This is unprecedented and created just for you, Agency community.

Conversations are limited to less than 25 people and they’re free. Details are below, but we have to say that you’d be crazy to miss these opportunities. Especially, if you’re one of the people who filled out the post-party survey and said, “I still don’t know what to do”. This is for you. See you this October!

Continue the Conversation with Battelle in Seattle
Thursday, October 18, 5:30-7:00 p.m.
RSVP to Stephanie Grow, sgrow@wghalliance.org
Location details will be sent with confirmation of your RSVP

This is your challenge: Circumcising adult males significantly reduces the risk of spreading HIV and cervical cancer. In Zimbabwe, cultural and financial barriers as well as access to clinics, stand in the way of many adult males making the decision to get circumcised. What would you do to motivate men to get circumcised in the name of the greater good despite the cultural tension and temporary personal discomfort it might cause?

Here’s what you can expect of the conversation on October 18

The Battelle team of Drs. Danuta Kaspyzyk, Dan Montano and Ed Liebow working on this challenge will give an overview (no advance reading necessary )

Small groups will discuss how to tackle the problem from many different angles. The Battelle team will guide conversation in your group. We want all ideas on the table and we hope all people feel free to chime in. Battelle will work within your smaller groups to figure out some key messages they can use to motivate men to get circumcised in Zimbabwe.

If there is a promising idea, Battelle’s team is open to exploring it alongside conversation participants. Battelle reserves the right to determine whether the idea will be corporately explored.

Beer, wine, snacks and nametags. We believe these things help you get to know people

Max 25 participants with completely different backgrounds (artists, marketers, programmers, assistants and everyone else who doesn’t fit into a category, but generally loves life and cares about others ), primarily between the ages of 25-34

You leave knowing more about Battelle, global health and some of the people behind the work. Battelle gains insight from you regarding their program. And hey, your idea might actually benefit real people. Win. Win.

Continue the Conversation with Washington State University in Seattle
Thursday, October 25, 5:30-7:00 p.m.
RSVP to Stephanie Grow, sgrow@wghalliance.org
Location details will be sent with confirmation of your RSVP

This is your challenge: Rabies kills 50,000 people around the world, mostly children, every year, even though there is a relatively inexpensive solution, vaccinating dogs. Most people don’t know this is an issue and not knowing continues the problem. What would you do to help WSU change this?

Here’s what you can expect of the conversation on October 25

Dr. Guy Palmer, Director of the Paul G. Allen School for Global Animal Health at WSU who proposed this challenge will provide your overview (you do not need to read anything in advance). Alexis Holzer from WSU will be on-hand to facilitate conversations and listen to ideas.

Small groups will discuss how to tackle the problem from three different angles: technology, policy, and innovative fundraising

Beer, wine, snacks and nametags. We believe these things help you get to know people.

Max 25 participants with completely different backgrounds (artists, marketers, programmers, assistants and everyone else who doesn’t fit into a category, but generally loves life and cares about others), primarily between the ages of 25-34.

We strongly encourage animal lovers to attend this conversation. You’ll know more about WSU’s School for Global Animal Health, be inspired to activism and you could contribute to the solution of this problem. Do some good for man and man’s best friend!

Why Agency created “Continue the Conversation”

To provide you with a direct opportunity to engage in meaningful thinking alongside global health organizations

To provide space for learning about global health and the world

To get you thinking about using your gifts and talents for global health

To directly introduce you to the people who work in Washington’s global health community

To introduce all of you young, socially conscious, cool, Agency people to each other

So show up. Continue the Conversation. Solve a problem. Change the world.

We received a note from HAI this week and had to share that due to the funds-raised at the party, Moms in Timor-Leste will be receiving not one, but two, text messages per week during the pregnancy and after delivery! This is fabulous!

Thank you to those who’ve taken the survey. We rely heavily on your feedback to shape future parties, so if you attended and haven’t given us your feedback, please do! Take the survey.

We wanted to let you know that HAI is grateful for the contribution you made at Agency 2012. We hope you will continue to support them as they do their important work. Here’s what the executive director HAI sent to us to send along to you…

“Contributions from Agency to HAI’s Mobile Moms project help to make it possible for us to continue our mission of universal access to quality health care. We thank Agency, not only for their generosity, but also for engaging young people about global health. The party is a truly creative way to begin conversations with youth to become more aware of the problems and be part of the solutions.”

As we head into the final moments of preparation for 2012, we were taken aback to read the just released results of what we funded in 2011. Thank you to IDRI who diligently used the $34,000 we raised to fight the spread of tuberculosis in Haiti. Here’s where your money went last year:
IDRI HAITI PROJECT FUNDED THROUGH AGENCY

Last year, IDRI received funding ($34,000) from Agency (formerly Party with a Purpose) to fight TB in Haiti – a country whose already heavy TB burden was increased by a devastating earthquake in 2010 – and to continue development of a much-needed new vaccine to combat TB, which kills two million people each year.

With the funding IDRI received, we:

Supplied the GHESKIO Center in Port-au-Prince, which offers clinical service, research and training in infectious diseases, with IDRI’s rapid TB diagnostic test.

Trained new personnel at the Center. (Sadly, two of the Center’s technicians were killed during the earthquake).

Purchased key equipment and technologies for the Center, and also provided the Center with basic scientific tools.

Gathered information from research studies conducted in Haiti.

And IDRI’s TB vaccine is ready for testing!

Safety testing of IDRI’s TB vaccine in a Phase I clinical trial will begin soon in the U.S.

After this trial is complete, IDRI will expand its TB vaccine clinical trials internationally to perform Phase I/II studies in endemic regions of the world.

Thanks to last year’s party-goers for supporting our research.

Read the full press release and clap for IDRI!!!

Putting together a glam party for 1,000 people is no easy task. And it couldn’t have been done without the dedication and creativity of people just like you – 20 and 30 somethings living right here in Seattle.

The Advisors have been meeting in their free time around work commitments since fall last year, not long after the 2011 Party with a Purpose dust settled. They’ve given their all, and the party is going to be cool thanks to them.

How did they get involved? A host of reasons – for some, their day jobs are at global health organizations, for others, their interest stems from previous experiences abroad, and for others still, they came to Party with a Purpose in 2010 or 2011 and wanted to make Agency 2012 even cooler.

Drum roll please…

Here the Agency Advisors introduce themselves in six-words. Be sure to say hi at the Party.

Andrea Moon: You had me at “locally crafted”

By Agency Advisor, Callie Stinson

They say a good picture is worth 1000 words. So 1000 pictures would probably be worth 1,000,000 words—right? In that case, Washington Global Health Alliance member, SightLife, and our friends at Seattle Met Magazine are helping us to write our story for the world.

Many of you will remember SightLife’s presence at last year’s party due to their very awesome Innovation Gallery representation – eye in a box anyone? Well this year, Sightlife, the only non-profit global health organization and eye bank solely focused on eliminating corneal blindness in the U.S. and around the world, has provided a $5000 sponsorship to Agency, part of which will cover a full spread of photos in Seattle Met Magazine, our beloved media sponsor. Where will the photos come from? Good question. Seattle Met will be sending along a couple of their pro events photographers to capture you at your best, and there’s going to be a super swanky photobooth (a new addition to this year’s party) to capture those glam couples shots and group smushy face photos that we all love to indulge in… (and this is all in addition to the red carpet experience that we had last year).

In addition to making this Saturday’s party even more awesome, we are immensely appreciative of the support Sightlife and Seattle Met have provided Agency because much of our success as an initiative depends on sustaining visibility and awareness in our local community. So smile and strike a pose all you savvy young professionals who love global health, all eyes are on you!

Week 5, Reason I’m excited #5: Twelve local artists have paired up with global health organizations to celebrate a selection of the innovations have been developed here in our community

The Innovation Gallery will make its debut appearance at Agency this year, and afterwards, the art work will go on display until August at the Seattle Center.

We are so grateful to our artists for coming forward and for dedicating their time and energy to creating unique masterpieces for Agency. A big thank you too, to the organizations who will each have representatives on hand at Agency to answer any questions you may have about their work.

The artist’s words below should go some way to whet your appetite for the gallery on the night. Have a read now, and then return after you have experienced the gallery.

Mama’s Happy Tears by Jennifer Carroll

www.apogiatura.com/apps/photos

Organization: University of Washington, School of Dentistry

In Jennifer’s words: “My piece is a spherical mosaic table fountain, a globe on one side with the NIFTY cup, and other small china teacups, swirling around with some ceramic baby faces and reaching arms; on the other side, the globe opens like a cavern to reveal the face of a woman, whose eyes are streaming with tears. I was drawn to this project by my passions for art, children, breast feeding, and an eerie coincidence: my childhood nickname was Nif.”

Particulate Matters! by Kris Colburn

kriswwxd@earthlink.net

Organization: Battelle Health and Life Sciences

In Kris’ words: “I chose to create a fine art piece to convey the seriousness of airborne pollution on childhood asthma, and to portray Battelle Centers’ satellite innovation technology to detect levels of specific particulate matter in affected regions of the world. I’ve found “getting my hands dirty” on this project to be exhilarating after years of computer graphic design and more technical projects and am looking forward to creating more.”

The Genetic Looking Glass by Kristen Dollison

www.seattleglassblowing.com

Organization: Institute for Systems Biology

In Kristen’s words: “Seattle Glassblowing Studio partnered with the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) to create a unique and interpretive piece of hand-blown glass artwork. This sculpture is intended to represent ISB’s research on the discovery of genetic variants that cause disease and fetal specific proteins in a mother’s blood that will measure and ultimately improve maternal and newborn health outcomes.”

blood sugar/here/now by Vida Rose Irlanda

http:www.vidarosepictures.com/

Organization: Public Health – Seattle & King County, Global to Local

In Vida Rose’s words: “I chose to be a part of this project because I’m greatly inspired by the work of our locally grown health organizations. I see a magnificent potential for scientific and artistic collaboration in the NW, where our fertile ecosystems foster progressive thinking in both fields. The Agency Innovation gallery provides a platform for this exciting dialogue.”

Birth by Rene Julio

www.facebook.com/renejulioart

Organization: University of Washington, Departments of Global Health and OB-GYN

In Rene’s words: “I decided to apply for this exhibit due to my love for science and humanity. It was more interesting when I was appointed to PRONTO, a program that started in Latin America (where I am from). So in few words my work will try to express the goal of PRONTO, and represent the beginning of it as well, humans at service of humanity…”

A Change in Nature and Understanding by Adam Kenney

http://dustofearth.blogspot.com/

Organization: World Vision

In Adam’s words: “Inspired by the outreach work of World Vision, I have decided to focus on the basics of their program. I chose to employ a triptych (a traditional instrument of devotion) in order to present all parties involved – fathers, mothers, children, hearts, etc. In accordance with World Vision’s Christian foundation, I have utilized traditional Christian symbolism to illustrate the changes in mentality and spirituality that these towns and villages are undergoing.”

Birth of the Leper, goddess of beauty and truth

and

Birth of Venus, goddess of anguish and destruction by Jacqueline Moulton

jacquelinemoultonart.com

Organization: Infectious Disease Research Institute

In Jacqueline’s words: “Cutaneous leishmaniasis draws our attention to poverty, to brokenness, and to the marginalized. In our culture we have made beauty god. We have sacrificed everything in order to look beautiful. But this disease draws our eyes to the sores of the world that bleed and ache. This disease draws our eyes to meet the eyes of those who hold the very keys of the kingdom in their hands. If my art is to do anything I hope that it will remind us that the poor, the marginalized, the hurting, and the aching among us will save us – will show us the way – will unlock the door to change and true beauty, that we often times, are too cowardly to even recognize.”

Anticipation by Terry Samilson

https://sites.google.com/site/terrysamilson/

Organization: PATH

In Terry’s words: “Illustrating a segment of PATH’s maternal support initiative in India, Sure Start, this is about commitment, relationships, salubrity, distance, planning ahead and anticipation. Cotton, linen, silk, glass beads and mylar are the foundation for embroidery, and needle turn appliqué. Shredded silk saris construct the women’s hair. A rupee border represents the savings required to transport a woman in labor to a safe birthing facility. Traditional Indian miniature landscape paintings and embroidery techniques inspired the composition.”

Carry Me Safely by Rachel Smith

Organization: Global Alliance to Prevent Prematurity and Stillbirth – Initiative of Seattle Children’s

In Rachel’s words: “I was especially inspired by the Global Alliance to Prevent Prematurity and Stillbirth when I put myself in the shoes of the women who experience the death their own new born. They spend months awaiting the joy of new life, only to give birth to a child already dead. That must be the ultimate feeling of disappointment.”

Latrine cap by Michiko Tanaka

www.yellowlaboratories.com

Organization: Washington State University, International Research and Agriculture Development

In Michiko’s word: “This Agency project interested me because I wanted to learn what The Global Health Alliance was about. I was partnered with WSU’s International Research and Development program. I was fascinated by the breadth of programs and enjoyed the challenge of presenting their project “Latrine Cap” in a way that would be palatable for an evening fete. I also believe in public service and am happy to contribute in my own individual way. My work all deals with understanding the world through art.”

Breathing Life by Jaycie Wakefield

Organization: Seattle Children’s Research Institute

In Jaycie’s words: “Walking through the halls of the Seattle Children’s Research Institute I peered through the thick glass into labs containing all kinds of glass tubes, machines, and computers. This was a new world to me; a beautiful world where people with big hearts are free to research and invent new ways to save the lives of babies. In that moment of abundant inspiration, I knew that it was my mission to use my artwork to help show the world the amazing impact that is being made by these people.”

Looking for a Response by Suze Woolf

www.suzewoolf-fineart.com

Organization: Seattle Biomedical Research Institute

In Suze’s words: “Seattle Biomedical Research Institute’s work on malaria vaccines inspired this artwork. They are combining systems biology and computational approaches to hunt for the proverbial needle in the haystack, and this piece invokes that dedicated pursuit. It suggests both laboratory equipment and the sheer big-data scale of the hunt for valid immunological responses.”
